Abstract

We study the dynamics of the business and residential distribution in response to a big shock in a city. It speaks to one of the most important questions in spatial economics: the extent of path dependency in the spatial pattern of population and employment in a city. In this project, we identify such path dependency in a city by exploiting a unique historical event in Hiroshima where the city centre was destroyed by the atomic bombing. We use fine-grained and detailed data across locations within Hiroshima to see how location choices of people changed over time in response to the destruction. In particular, we will compare the population density and employment density within a city across different periods to evaluate the path dependency. We also propose a quantitative general equilibrium urban model with location choices and the forward-looking decision of development that characterizes the adjustment process in the revival of the city. We bring the historical data on the population distribution, employment distribution and sorting patterns of different income groups into the structural model to identify the parameters in the underlying mechanisms of path dependency. This structural approach allows us to quantify the long-term impact of the catastrophic shock on urban structure.
