Infectious disease modelling informed by spatial and social settings data

In the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple social settings have been highlighted to be at higher risk of transmission than others, e.g. pubs, restaurants, red-light industries, medical institutions and care homes. However, the transmission risks of SARS-COV-2 specific to these settings have not been fully quantified with a model that accounts for heterogeneous and fine-scale contact behaviours in the population. Using the population flow data, we characterise the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases, especially COVID-19, in different social settings. Specifically, we construct an agent-based dynamic model of disease transmission informed by the population flow data and run simulations of infectious disease spread over the modelled social contact network. We then calibrate the model parameters by fitting the simulation outcomes to the observed infectious disease incidence data, thereby assessing the differential transmission rates in various social settings.
