Abstract

Japanisacountrywithahighrateofnumberofearthquakesduetoitsgeographicalpositionandgeomorphologicalconstitution.Niigataprefecture,locatedontheHonshuIslandonthecoastoftheSeaofJapan,hasbeenstruggledbyalargenumberofearthquakesinthislastdecade.Evenifthetechnology,intermsofanti-seismicconstructionsandnaturaldisastersinvestigations,isinrapiddevelopmentitisnotassuringyetaguaranteeofsafety.Especiallyintheruralareasthetechnologyisalwaysslowertoarrive.Theaimofthisstudyistoanalysespatiallyandpsychologicallythepeople'sbehaviourduringandimmediatelyafteranearthquakeoccurs.Byunderstandingthelevelofpreparednessandmappingtheirmovementsitwillbepossibletoimprovetheactualsituationbyproposingmorereliablesolutionsofemergencyevacuationandemergencyprocedures.ThestudyareaistheVillageofKawaguchi,locatedinthecentralpartoftheNiigataPrefecture.In2004,oneofthestrongestearthquake(magnitude6.8)ofthiscenturyinJapanstruckthisareaprovokinglargeamountofdamagessuchashouses(606destroyed,146heavilydamaged,344damaged),publicadministrations,schoolsanddeaths(59intotal,6inKawaguchiVillage).Thissituationwasduetothelowamountofanti-seismicsystemsadoptedinthisareaandtothegeomorphologicalconstitutionofthesoilthatproducedalargenumberoflandslides.Tounderstandhowpeoplebehavedinthesemomentsiscapitaltoavoidfuturetragediesandimprovethelevelofsecurityinruralareas.　Inthisresearch,wewouldliketodelineatethesuitablespatialbehaviourofresidents.
