Abstract

Insimplifiedterms,urbanphenomenatendtobeclassifiedasthosewhicheasilylendthemselvestomeasurementandexactquantification,andthosewhichescapequantification(Low,/AfterMethod/,2004).Relevantengineeringdisciplinestypicallyaddressthefirstgroup,
whilesocialsciencesandhumanitiesexploretherest.Urbandesignfocusesontheintersectionsbetweenthedisciplinesofarchitecture,landscapeandplanning.Havingtorespondtototalityofthosecomplexdemands,urbandesignisirreducibletoanyofindividualcomponentsorsystemsofcomponentswhichconstitute/theurban/(Lefebvre,/KeyWritings/,2004).Urbandesignneedstoaddress,withequalconfidence,boththenon-measurable(“textual”)andmeasurable(“numerical”)manifestationsof/theurban/.Thisprojectchallengesthatunsustainableschismbyexaminingandbyexpandingtheoverlapor,atleast,facilitatingbettercommunicationbetweenthe“textual”andthe“numerical”,byfocusingattwosystemsofurbanphenomenawhichstubbornlyresistoururgetoquantify–(urban)cultureand(environmental)sustainability.Attheconceptualleveltheprojectenterslatestinvestigationsoftherelationshipbetweensystemtheoryandassemblagetheory.Acompositeinterdisciplinarytheoreticalframework(s)oftheprojectarereliantonplacetheory,Lefebvriansocialtheoriesandtheideaof/eco­-urbanity/.TheprojectwillincludeexplorationsofrecentlyresurgentpracticesofSituationism,andpsychogeograpy.Theaimistoadvanceurbandesigntheoryrelatedtodialecticalcoupledensity/intensityby:(a)focusingonrelationshipbetweenconcrete(multiple)densitiesand(multiple)intensities;(b)addressingthecomplexityarisingfromrecognitionofculturalspecificityof/theurban/;(c)defininglocalassessmentcriteria(asmeasureofresponsibilityandresponsivenessofdesignproposals).
