Assessment and Applicability of Road Accident Information Collection in Japan

This proposal is devoted to construct a systematical framework for automated correcting the road traffic accidents data. Geographic Information System (GIS) are combined to provide analysis. The Digital Road Map (DRM) is used as standard road network while the accident locations are evaluated and adjusted by finding shortest distance from an accident point to a network path in Euclidean geometry or finding shortest distance from an accident point to the closest intersection. Several types of road accident data have been collected through handheld devices or manually registered by the police throughout the year. The collection process sometime results in unreliable and inaccurate data since instrument and operator errors can be occurred. This research aims to develop algorithms and tools to evaluate the reliability of road accident data collection methods in various aspects as well as the accuracy assessment of the data provided by each city police bureau. The results give new mean to evaluate the historical records of car accident cases.
