Spatial Structures and Dynamics of Global Coastal Cities. Analysis and Evaluation Approaches to Support Sustainable Metropolitan Development

The aim of this research is to identify coherent spatial structures and dynamics inductively from the different features and characteristics of the intra-urban level of three case studies located in countries with strong cultural and societal differences. To reach this objective, a coastal metropolitan area of at least 5 million inhabitants has been selected in each case study (Osaka/Japan,Barcelona/Spain,Rio/Brazil). The study of the internal organization of these case studies will allow localizing and understanding the spatial inequalities in terms of urban integration, mobility patterns and socio-economic development. Maritime activities are faced with spatial issues related to other urban activities (use conflicts, available spaces...). The aforementioned begs the following questions: is there an auto-organized tangle of the different urban functions or is there an ordered structure? How do the metropolitan centralities articulate with coastal development? Where are the abandoned areas of the city? Where are the areas with the greatest potential as regards to urban regeneration and new activities accommodation? The main objective is to assess not only opportunities but also potential difficulties associated with the spatial dimension of metropolitan/coastal development. The identification of these relevant spatial structures will then allow questioning the role of the main drivers giving rise to the spatial differences. The results of the analyses are expected to highlight the most homogeneous spaces in terms of urbanization, sustainability and socio-economic characteristics. The comparative approach between the different national contexts will enable the identification of structural invariants and local specificities within the case studies.
